2017 Annual Low-Beer Lecture on September 28th

Dr. Nora Volkow will be the keynote speaker at the 2017 Edith and John Hans Low-Beer Memorial lecture, titled Mental Illness & Drug Addiction: Common Developmental Risks & Brain Pathways. Director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Nora Volkow is a world leader in the neurobiology of diseases of reward and self-control such as addiction and obesity. Dr. Volkow was born in Mexico City, where she lived until she completed medical school. While training as a psychiatrist in New York City, she started doing research with brain imaging technologies to study how drugs affect the human brain. Nora’s research has been instrumental in demonstrating that addiction is a brain disease that undermines the function of circuits that underlie reward, motivation, and self-control—and in identifying overlapping circuitry disruptions in obesity. Dr. Volkow has published more than 600 peer-reviewed articles and written more than 95 book chapters and non-peer-reviewed manuscripts, and has also edited three books on neuroimaging for mental and addictive disorders. She has been the recipient of multiple awards and was inducted into the Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) Hall of Fame. Dr. Volkow has been named one of Time magazine’s “Top 100 People Who Shape Our World,” “One of the 20 People to Watch” by Newsweek magazine, Washingtonian magazine’s “100 Most Powerful Women” and “Innovator of the Year” by U.S. News & World Report. You don’t want to miss it.

Thursday, September 28, 2017, 7 pm At Oscar Peterson Concert Hall 7141 Sherbrooke West, Montreal

Free admission and no need to register in advance Lecture will be presented in English

A Wonderful Day Trip to Ottawa

L’Abri en Ville, enjoyed a wonderful day trip on a warm and sunny day to Ottawa during the month of May’s tulip festival. Many residents, volunteers and staff benefited from informative and interesting tours of the Parliament buildings and of the Governor General’s home, Rideau Hall.  This was a fun and enriching experience to help celebrate Canada’s 150 years of confederation!
What a fabulous way to celebrate Canada’s birthday.

Many thanks to the Foundation of Greater Montreal

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA!

By Sue Purcell, L’Abri Volunteer Thanks to a generous grant, our residents will be enjoying a day trip to Ottawa and the Parliament Buildings in May, during the Ottawa’s tulip Festival. The Foundation of Greater Montreal selected L’Abri en Ville to receive $2,500 from the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th Anniversary. In our application sent last October, we proposed a bus trip to Canada’s capital to be part of the celebrations of Canada’s Birthday by exploring its history and culture. About 35 residents and staff will board a bus leaving at 8 a.m., arriving in time for a guided tour of Parliament Hill. After a lunch we plan to visit the city’s tulip-bedecked park lands before returning home. What a fabulous way to celebrate Canada’s birthday.
Many thanks to the Foundation of Greater Montreal

L’Abri Has a New Home!

Taking steps to ensure the longevity of L’Abri en Ville, a property was purchased to house the L’Abri office and activities.

Our new office location is at:

The residents of L’Abri will benefit from having a place where they can come to meet with coordinators, volunteers and other residents for everything from working on a problem, to planning an event, doing a craft or just having a place to meet another resident for an afternoon game of chess. In this comfortable, convenient setting that will be the head office for L’Abri, we will also be able to accommodate volunteer meetings as well as board and executive meetings. The L’Abri en Ville Model and our mission remain the same, but our ability to serve the residents and to partner with and learn from other community groups will expand. Being in the heart of Little Burgundy where other community groups, including those dealing with housing are nearby, will be an enriching experience for L’Abri. This is a major milestone in the life of our organization, now in its 25th year. We would like to thank all the residents, volunteers, staff and generous contributors whhave made LAbri en Ville the supportive community it is today.                                                                                  Welcome to our new Home!

Successful 2016 Montreal Walks For Mental Health

And L’Abri en Ville Supporters were there despite the rain!

We may have gotten wet to the skin, but our spirits were high as about 1,000 Montrealers paraded along de Maisonneuve on Sunday October 16.   2016-mtl-walks_-labri-banner-2_sam   Signs and banners proudly proclaimed openness and positivity toward those living with mental health issues. Workers, volunteers, consumers and family members smiled through sheets of rain and even dogs braved the weather for a good cause. We all mixed and mingled, sharing our experience. This year’s Walk for Mental Health was a big success! Sue Canada Walks for Mental Health
